Spartan Defined

By Don Jones, Owner/President

In January of 2009 The Spartan Group was formed. At that time I was defining in my own mind who we were going to be. I was no longer worried about trying to impress anyone; I just wanted to do things the right way. Simple as that!

I started out by writing down words that I felt strongly about, words that represented what I believed in. In the end those words that made the most sense to me are listed below. These words collectively are defined by the singular word of "Spartan."

That is how I came up with "The SPARTAN Group"

After I formed the company I realized a couple of unique things. My high school that I hold in the highest esteem was nicknamed the Spartans and thus many of my friends and family members think I named the company after my high school moniker. To top it off my father's long-time employer in San Jose, California was named Spartan Dodge and thus my father and his former owner were certain that I named the company after that dealership!

Bottom Line --you know the truth!

In ancient Greece, there were two great city states: Athens and Sparta. Athens had the artists, the good food, the great parties. Sparta had the warriors - the guys who went to bed early and drilled all day. Spartans were a disciplined people.

  1. 1APPEARANCE
Cleanliness and orderliness are paramount and must be cultural. This applies to our inventory, equipment, furniture, and facility. Our team members will adhere to our mandated dress code.
  2. 2BASICS
Day-to-day focus on the essential basics of our business. An understanding that the basics are and always will be the foundation of a successful business. We will master the basics better than anyone else.
  3. 3PRACTICAL
Our decision-making process will be based on practical models. We are not visionaries but rather problem solvers and process improvers but most importantly we will be the best at working with people: both employees and customers.
  4. 4RATIONAL
Our approach to business will be sensible and balanced with realistic expectations.
  5. 5SHREWD
We will be perceptive; we will take advantage of situations because we are on the ball! We will be willing to make choices that seem risky to others but have little if any downside to us. Above-average Expectations for Return on Investment will be the starting point for any investment we make.
  6. 6SIMPLE
Our model is for everyone. All members of our team will find our processes and procedures to be simple to understand, simple to execute, and simple to teach to others.
  7. 7THRIFTY
Cheap is founded on the ability to say "no." Thrifty is the ability to look at all dollar-based decisions with willingness to say "yes" and or "no." Being excessive is something we won't become.
  8. 8WISE
It's OK if others get ahead but we will not be left behind. The fable of the Tortoise and the Hare will echo within all of our regular decisions. History and Experience are priceless and we would be fools if we did not borrow from vaults on a regular basis.
